Description
The Nautilus silicone spatula, finished in blue, is built for the scraping, folding and mixing jobs that come up in almost every meal, and it is designed to be the tool you reach for by habit rather than the one buried at the back of the drawer. The head is moulded from food-grade silicone, a material chosen for kitchen tools because it stays flexible rather than brittle, will not react with food or leach anything into it, and does not hold on to the smell of whatever you cooked last time the way some plastics can. It is rated heat resistant to around 230C (446F), which covers everything from a simmering sauce to food fresh off a hot pan, without the risk of melting, warping or releasing an odour that cheaper rubber tools sometimes do at high heat. Because silicone is soft relative to metal or hard plastic, it will not scratch the non-stick coating on pans, the glaze on ceramic dishes, or the finish on stainless steel cookware, which is the main reason to choose it over a metal tool for everyday cooking. It has a flexible, slightly angled head that follows the curve of a bowl or pan wall closely, so it picks up batter, sauce or dressing that a rigid tool would leave behind, and the one-piece construction leaves no seams or joins where food can get trapped and become hard to clean out. Use it for scraping bowls clean when baking, folding delicate batters, and stirring sauces in a hot pan. The flexible head does most of the work here, adapting to the shape of whatever pan, pot or bowl you are using instead of forcing you to work around a rigid tool, which makes it a genuinely everyday piece rather than one you keep for a single specific recipe. It is dishwasher safe for routine cleaning, though hand-washing with warm soapy water and drying it fully before putting it away will keep the blue finish looking newer for longer. Because the material will not absorb odours the way some plastics do, a normal wash is enough even after using it with strong-smelling ingredients such as garlic, chilli or fish. Part of the Nautilus silicone kitchen tool range, this piece is sold on its own so you can replace or add to your existing set one tool at a time rather than buying a full block you may not need. It is a practical, low-cost pickup for a new kitchen, a student flat, or simply retiring an old scratched-up metal or nylon tool. A comfortable grip matters as much as the head shape for a tool used dozens of times a week: the handle here is sized and weighted to sit securely in the hand during longer cooking sessions, so it does not slip when your hands are wet or oily, and it will not conduct heat back up from a hot pan the way an all-metal tool can.
